History of Las Olas Beach Resort and La Barqueta Beach
Las Olas Beach Resort is located on La Barqueta Beach, within a family-owned agricultural property that stretches over 9 miles (14 km) of pristine grey-silver sand along the Pacific coast of Panama. This family-owned property has been passed down through four generations and has been a vital agricultural area in Chiriquí since the 1600s.
1885 - La Barqueta
In 1885, Antonio Anguizola de La Lastra named the property La Barqueta, after the Latin word "barquin," meaning one who travels by boat—a fitting name for a plantation once navigated by boat due to its wetlands and flooded riverbanks. His son, Antonio Anguizola Palma, expanded the plantation in 1915, turning it into one of the largest cattle-raising estates in Panama and constructing a pier for shipping cattle across the Americas.
2001 - Las Olas Resort Built
In 2001, Juan Gabriel Arauz Anguizola, a great-grandson of Antonio, built Las Olas Resort and community on the plantation. To protect wildlife, portions of La Barqueta have been designated as a conservation area for endangered species such as sea turtles, birds, reptiles, and mangroves.
Today
Today, the property features Las Olas Beach Resort, La Abigail Restaurant, Bar Azul, La Barqueta Poolside Bar & Grill, La Bella Donna Convention Center, oceanfront homes, Las Brisas Condominiums, and Las Olas Towers.
